Open Letter to California

Dear California,

Good work! Your voters came out in record numbers to vote Tuesday, and helped to elect our first African-American president. It was an historic moment, and you were there, at the polls, making it happen, and I am proud of you for that.

But I am not going to talk about that. I want to talk about the horrible folly that has been committed in your state. 52% of your voters have approved a proposal to ban gay marriage. 52% of your voters have come out and said that they believe that the law should not allow two people of the same sex who are lovers to share the same rights as two people of the opposite sex. 52% of your voters decided that the government should decide what kind of relationship two consenting adults can have. 52% of your voters have decided that religion should be enforced by the government. 52% of your voters voted for hatred of a particular group of people.

Remember, California, the country is watching you. The culture of our nation comes in large part right from your state (out of the television and film screens). What you do, we do too. I fear that if you decide to have hateful, ignorant and unconstitutional laws, other states will follow your lead.

I hope that you will find a way to right this wrong, California. There are a lot of states that have passed evil laws, but I don’t expect that kind of thing from you. Please, don’t take this kind of crap from your people.
